IBM Internship: IBM Summer Internship Programme 2024 | IBM Quantum
At IBM Quantum, we’re bringing useful quantum computing to the world. This technology is widely expected to solve valuable problems that are unsolvable using any known methods on classical supercomputers. Quantum summer internships, as part of the IBM Research Global Internship Program, are perhaps the most valuable in the field. Every intern working in quantum makes meaningful contributions to the IBM Quantum Development Roadmap — pushing the field of quantum computing forward in the process.
We have directly trained more than 400 interns at all levels of higher education since 2020, many of whom have gone on to work at IBM Quantum or elsewhere in the field of quantum after graduation. Interns have the opportunity to work directly with researchers, developers, and business experts working to advance the field of quantum computing. Our interns have researched quantum applications, and design hardware, developed open-source projects with Qiskit, carried out market research, and more.

Interns in the US will work at either the Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, or at IBM Research — Almaden in San Jose, California from either May 20, 2024, to August 9, 2024, or from June 17, 2024 to September 6, 2024. 2024 Summer Intern: Quantum Research Scientist :
Introduction:
As an experimentalist, theorist, or quantum information scientist with IBM Quantum, your job will be to advance the field of quantum computing research. Areas of research include superconducting qubits, quantum control, quantum error correction, quantum complexity theory, quantum algorithms, quantum machine learning, and quantum compilers and optimizers (among other areas).
We are advancing quantum computing technology, hardware, and software while exploring applications to make quantum broadly usable and accessible. With a worldwide network of Fortune 500 companies, academic institutions, researchers, educators, and enthusiasts, we are committed to driving innovation for our clients, our partners, and the open-source Qiskit community.
Your Role and Responsibilities
- This is for a 2024 summer internship with the following start dates: May–August or June – September for quarter system schools.
Responsibilities include:
- Advancing the entire quantum computing technology stack and exploring applications to make quantum broadly usable and accessible.
- Collaborate with others in a research and development environment, participate in executive speaker series, and showcase effective problem-solving skills.
- Researching experiences in quantum computing, quantum simulation, quantum chemistry, quantum information, or related areas.
Key Skills :
- Applicants should be Ph.D. & MS students
- Experience in an academic graduate program related to quantum computing or other applicable area of study
- Coursework or projects in quantum information, computation, or algorithms
- Knowledge of classical compilation techniques such as LLVM or similar (LLVM, GCC, etc.)
- Experience with one or more general-purpose programming languages such as Python
- Research experience in an area of study related to quantum computing
Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
- Programming experience in core & scientific languages (e.g. python, numpy, scipy, matplotlib) and Qiskit
- Recognition as a Qiskit Advocate
- Certification as an IBM Quantum Developer (Quantum Computation using Qiskit v0.2X)
- Familiarity with Git and/or GitHub
